About Mark Annen

I founded Annen Architecture in 1996 as an architectural design studio with a side interest in fabricating art and furniture. In 1988 I graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Oregon. After experience at Thomas Hacker Architects and Thompson Viavoda Architects in Portland, I moved to London and worked at Rick Mather Architects. For three years I managed projects ranging from university planning to high-end restaurants. As well as being an active rower and cyclist, I studied for a year at the Graduate Program for Urban Design at the Polytechnic of Central London. An eight month backpacking journey across Asia brought me to Seattle, dividing my time between work in a custom metal-fabricating shop (47 Productions), and Adams Mohler Architects. The opportunity to design a house for family friends brought me back to Portland, where I subsequently worked for Lee Winn and, later, Architropolis. The experience gained from these smaller, design-oriented firms gave me a thorough grounding in unique residential and commercial design.

My strong personal interests in gardening, cooking, travel and history have influenced my design philosophy as one that celebrates the joys of life; a good meal together with family and friends, appreciation of the honest nature of things and the power of environment to enrich quality of life.

When working with clients I listen carefully to fully realize the greatest potential with respect to individual needs, site, time-line and budget. A schematic design is discussed and developed into detailed construction documents for permitting and bidding. I personally direct the process from initial interview to completion, insuring the utmost quality and efficiency. I approach each project with an open mind and although my work is shaped by my sensibilities they are not stamped with a trademark aesthetic. I believe in facilitating the needs of my clients.
